Bury completed a 2-1 comeback over West Didsbury & Chorlton, midfield debutant Reece Kendall spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game.
Reece Kendall: “Really enjoyed it, the fans were amazing, the lads have been brilliant since I came in. Everyone’s welcomed me and it’s just been really enjoyable to come in to be fair. I thought stepping down I’d find it different, but I think compared to some of the clubs that I’ve been at, I think the standard and the set-up and everything is second to none. It’s better than a lot of teams in the league above that and I’ve really enjoyed it.”
Further adding “All credit to other teams to be fair, they put up a good fight in the first 10-15. We were a bit shaky to start but I think that’s off our own back. We set the standard in the warm-up, it worked great, we took that into the game but then after that I think we set our standards, we got on the ball, we put them on the back foot. I thought DJ [Pedro] were outstanding, the wingbacks worked the balls off. When we got our foot on the game and started moving as a team and working as a team, they didn’t cause us any problems for the rest of the game to be fair. I thought we were quite comfortable, I thought we defended well, I thought we attacked very well, I thought the midfielders were brilliant and we took it to them really. The scoreline, I think we could have had two or three more, I think we didn’t take as many chances as we could have done but I thought they were brilliant, the togetherness of the group, I thought we were outstanding. We never got our heads down, even when they went one up, it just gave us more motivation to go and get a goal and get two. The fans backed us as well, they were like a 12th man today. First time playing in front of them, it was really, really enjoyable because you’ve got that extra push. Even though the lads are talking on the pitch, when you’ve got the fans at the side like that, I just think it pushes you that extra mile.”
Reece then spoke about how its like adapting to the new system with him saying “I’ve enjoyed it because all the lads are technically very good, all the lads can play in different positions, and I think everyone’s adapted to it really well. The AstroTurf helps massively, it’s an absolute carpet. When we’re under the cosh a little bit, getting the ball down, keeping a few passes, I think it helps having Mitch [Allen] at the back on the ball. He’s very, very good on the ball, so it takes a bit of pressure off at times. But apart from that, I think everyone’s adapted to it very well and I think we’ve done really.”
He then spoke about the usefulness of his long throw, he said “Yes, I’ve had it for a while now, to be fair. I don’t really think much on it, to be fair. I just wang it in and see if something comes from it, to be fair. But it definitely helps, it definitely puts them on the back foot when you can put it in the box like a set-piece. If we can get a few goals from that this season, especially in early doors and then late on in-game if we’re chasing anything, it just helps a bit.”
Finally, he spoke about what its like to be part of this squad in the most important part of the season with him saying “Yes, I really enjoyed coming into it. The changing room, the players, the staff, the management, everyone’s welcomed me. I loved playing today; I really enjoyed it. I’ve not enjoyed playing like that for a while, to be fair. I just think everyone together as a group, in and out of the changing room, just makes the club what it is. And it just makes it really enjoyable to play. So, yes, I can’t wait to carry on and hopefully we can get the title.”
