Bury ran out 2-0 winners away at Prestwich Heys, todays MOTM Josh Gregory spoke to the club to give us his thoughts on the game.
Josh Gregory: “Yes, honestly, it feels so good to be back. Honestly, the past few weeks, being back on the team, it means so much. When I come to Bury, obviously they’re a great fan base. I literally said, because I was injured at my last club, I was like, I want to enjoy my football and be injury free. Obviously, I’ve had my injuries, so all I want to do now is just help the team. Obviously, win the league, enjoy my football again. So, anything I can get on the top is just a bonus. And obviously, we’ve had a couple of injuries in the squad. So, Gaff [McNabb] has asked me to do a job today and I’m so happy I could deliver. It was tough conditions today, but I think that kind of helps me a little bit. And it’s brilliant to get the goal out of the lads and get three points.”
He then spoke about how having a positive mindset helped him through his injury troubles, he said: “Yes, and I think Gaff will back me up on this. I’m just a massive part of this team in terms of just personality, helping the young lads out, a bit of a leader when I can be. So that is my role this year because of all the injuries. I can’t really do much else, but I’ve just got to take my chance when I am. I’m still getting back to full fitness, but I think I did a good show and it’s nice to get 90 minutes in, even though I’ll probably regret it tonight and be getting cramp all the way home. But yes, I’m really happy.”
Josh then spoke to us about his goal in todays match, he said: “Yes, well, my first one was awful, wasn’t it? So that was really good. So, I’ve just seen it drop on the edge of the box. I’ve opened up and all the defenders and the keeper have just gambled. So it’s exactly what I meant to do. I meant to hook it near post and luckily, it’s come off. I don’t think I’ll be able to do it again, but there we go.”
He then spoke about the importance of keeping a clean sheet with him saying “It’s massive and me and Mitch are best mates. We’ve been at the same club for each other and Mitch has been gagging for that clean sheet for so long and when we went to a back five today, there’s no excuses. With the players that we’ve got, we need to be getting clean sheets more. If we get clean sheets, we will win this league. It’s as simple as that because we will always score goals with the likes of what we’ve got up front. So that was a big target for us and to get a clean sheet and three points, like you said, is massive. At 1-0, still quite a close encounter.”
He then also spoke about the relief of seeing Bryan Ly second go in to kill the match off with him saying “They were a very good team. They pushed us all the way and it’s just relief, honestly, especially just putting my first 90 back and flagging a little bit and to see Bryan, a great finish from him, just to see him putting that back at the net, it’s relief more than anything. Yes, just shut up shop than.”
To finish the interview Josh looked ahead to next weekend clash with West Didsbury, he said: “Well, yes, I was obviously injured for that one, but we definitely owe them one.”
